First Night Sandwich Offers Something for Everyone!
Sandwich, MA – November 23 – First Night Sandwich will offer something for everyone during the December 31, 4 to 9 pm, event held for the third year in Sandwich Village. Whether you are a fan of jazz, enjoy traditional American and Celtic Folk Music and Dance, or like melodious voices raised in a choir or just want to sit quietly with your family and listen to a storyteller, then First Night Sandwich is the place to be on New Year’s Eve.
Looking for jazz? Bart Weisman is the consummate jazz performer. He performs a blend of jazz, Latin and pop. It is said of him that his rhythmic arrangements are always in service to the song and the soloist, providing a shimmering cymbal or a cushioning bass in all the right places. Weisman has performed with a number of musicians on Cape Cod including: Jay Gils (J. Gils Band), Jersey Boys, Siobhan Magnus (from American Idol), Howard Alden (Newport Jazz Festival All-Stars), Dick Johnson (leader of the Artie Shaw Band), Joe Murany (clarinet player with Louis Armstrong’s last All Stars Band), Rebecca Parris, George Gritzbach Blues Band, and many more. Weisman is teaching Drums & Jazz at the Cape Cod Conservatory and he is on the Board of Directors for the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. He can be seen performing at First Night Sandwich in one of the many venues located in the village.
If folk music excites you and draws you in then catch a performance of Atwater-Donnelly. The highly acclaimed husband and wife duo, Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly, present delightful programs of traditional American and Celtic folk songs, a capella pieces, old-time gospel songs, dance tunes, and original works. Elwood and Aubrey lend gorgeous and unusual harmonies and play guitar, Appalachian mountain dulcimer, mandolin, tin whistle, harmonica, banjo, bones, spoons, lumberjacks, and other surprises including Appalachian clog dancing French Canadian foot work and tap. The couple have been performing American and Celtic Folk Music since 1987. They have performed throughout the United States and on occasion, abroad. Their ten recordings receive international airplay. Highlights include National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, Fiona Ritchie’s “Thistle and Shamrock,” and the nationally syndicated “Midnight Special” out of Chicago.
The Sandwich High School Show Choir will performing during First Night Sandwich. Under the guidance of Melinda Lasit, Choir Director, and Kevin Lasit, Theatrical Director/Choreographer, Sandwich Soul has grown from a loosely-knit group of teenagers into an award winning ensemble of performers – all within the span of just one academic year. The group sings songs from the American song book. Catch them during their performance at First Night Sandwich.
Storytellers have been performing down through history. Much of the institutional memory of the world has been narrated by people either trained or untrained in this engaging art form. Janet Glanz Family Storyteller has been telling stories and sharing enthusiasm for this craft for more than 40 years. Glantz integrates audience participation in her performances using, songs, finger plays, and dancing limberjacks. She is a retired Children’s Library Media Specialist who collaborated with teachers to integrate storytelling into their curriculum.
